PUHOI VALLEY NAMED 2020 FAVOURITE NZ CHEESE COMPANY
Puhoi Valley Cheese has been named Barker's NZ Cheese Month Favourite NZ Cheese Company.
During NZ Cheese Month in October, Kiwis were asked to vote for their favourite local cheese company on the new Cheeselovers NZ website, with the weight of voting going to Puhoi Valley Cheese.
Puhoi Valley has a proud NZ cheesemaking history. Puhoi was settled in 1863 by 83 Bohemians emigrants attracted by the offer of free land. After clearing the land they established themselves as farmers and used their traditional European recipes to make cheese.
The first Puhoi Valley Cheese Company factory, nestled in the upper reaches of the picturesque Valley, was originally a goat farm. In 1983 a small manufacturing plant was built to convert goats’ milk into ice cream powder and camembert. It wasn’t long before the factory diversified into making cheese from cows’ milk and broadened the product range to include feta.
Puhoi Valley Cheese Company has expanded and now in 2020 makes premium cheeses including camembert, brie, feta, blue and other European products such as ricotta, crème fraiche and mascarpone.
The Barker's NZ Cheese Month Favourite NZ Cheese Company voting was part of NZ Cheese Month, organised by the New Zealand Specialist Cheesemakers Association to promote locally made cheese. Announcing Puhoi Valley Cheese as Barker's NZ Cheese Month Favourite NZ Cheese Company NZSCA President Neil Willman offered the Association’s congratulations. He also thank Barker’s for their support.
